today i saw a burning car. literally, a van that was ON FIRE with big giant flames reaching out of the burst windows and climbing into the sky. it was the strangest thing. i went out to the parking lot here at work, got in my car, looked up and there was this van on the corner ON FIRE! we called 911 like good citizens and then the fire truck pulled up two seconds later so obviously someone had called before us. i know they're quick but that was really quick.

so yeah, burning car. holy crap.

the weather isn't quite cooperating for this work trip. normally i would be elated but i was actually looking forward to this presentation. it would have been (will be, fingers crossed) the first statewide conference i'll have presented at. but, you know, 8-12 inches of snow is pretty fun too. i can handle that.

i got the heart rate monitor i bought myself yesterday and i've been totally geeking out. i wore it today out of curiousity and found that i actually reach my target heart rate for about two minutes on my walk to and from class. it's all those steps for the tunnel and then walking through deep snow. then i worked out on my lunch break. this thing rocks! i love it! i'm now convinced that the reason i felt so shitty after working out last year when i first started was because i was doing way more than i should have been.

and on sort of the same subject: i remarked yesterday to some co-workers that the girl scout cookies don't have any trans-fats in them this year. i was jokingly bemoaning the fact that now i want to buy them ALL. and i got the standard sarcastic comment that "oh, you really have to worry about that. ha ha." i don't blame people for saying things like this. the media perpetuates the idea that the real evil in fats is that you'll gain weight not the fact that too much of the wrong ones significantly increases the risk of heart disease. not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it really annoys me - shown by the fact that i'm still thinking about her comment a day later. i DO have to worry about fats in my food. yes, i weigh 130 pounds and certainly shouldn't lose any weight but i also have an uncle that died of a heart attack at 36 years old. there is heart and vascular disease all over both sides of my family! i definitely need to worry about what i eat.

my god, look at me on my soapbox again. sorry, just getting it off my chest.
